Blog:When Should Your Carlsbad Elementary Student See an Orthodontist?

As your child moves through elementary school, you may notice changes in how their permanent teeth are coming in. Crowding, gaps, or changes in their bite can raise an important question - when is the right time to see an orthodontist?
At Great Smiles Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, we encourage families to think about orthodontic care before all of their child’s permanent teeth have arrived. An early evaluation can help us understand how the teeth and jaws are developing and determine whether treatment is needed now or simply monitored over time.
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic checkup no later than age 7. At this age, children typically have a combination of baby and permanent teeth, giving an orthodontist an opportunity to evaluate tooth eruption, jaw growth, spacing, and bite development.
Seeing our orthodontists at age 7 does not mean your child will need braces right away. Many elementary students can simply be monitored as they grow. For others, identifying a developing concern early may allow us to address it at a more appropriate stage of growth.
Parents do not need to wait until age 7 if they notice changes that could affect their child’s bite or dental development. Consider scheduling an orthodontic evaluation if your child has:
• Crowded, overlapping, or unusually spaced teeth
• An overbite, underbite, crossbite, or open bite
• Permanent teeth that appear to be coming in at unusual angles
• Difficulty biting or chewing comfortably
• Baby teeth that are lost especially early or remain much longer than expected
• Jaws that appear noticeably uneven or out of proportion
An orthodontic examination can determine whether these changes are part of normal development or should be monitored more closely.
Children’s mouths change quickly during the elementary school years. Because the jaws are still growing and permanent teeth are continuing to erupt, regular monitoring allows us to watch how your child’s smile develops.
When early treatment is appropriate, it may help guide jaw development, create room for incoming permanent teeth, or address certain bite problems while a child is still growing. However, not every orthodontic issue requires early treatment. Sometimes the best approach is to wait until more permanent teeth have erupted.
There is no single age when every child should begin braces or another orthodontic treatment. We base our recommendations on your child’s individual development, bite, tooth position, and growth. At Great Smiles Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, our orthodontic options include traditional metal braces, clear aligners, retainers, and expanders when appropriate. Our goal is to recommend treatment at the stage when it can provide the greatest benefit for your child.
